One of my favorite things to do as a kid was sneak into my dad’s closet and gaze in awe at his astonishing record collection. He had a bunch of classics from the '60s, all in mint condition, and I can remember their cover art as clearly as I can remember the sweet face of my childhood teddy bear.
There were the bellbottomed Beatles walking across Abbey RoadLet It BleedBlonde on BlondeIf You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. I believe Michelle Phillips was wearing cowboy boots. In fact, I know she was — because I really wanted those boots.
Yet, not as badly as I wanted to inherit my dad’s vinyl collection. But alas, a hurricane swept through my suburban Florida neighborhood when I was knock, knock, knocking at middle school’s door, and all of his beautiful albums were warped by water damage.
It was a shame, because he took really great care of all of his LPs, and if he knew the life hack below, I would have been able to pass those sweet audible treats down to my kids too.
The trick in the video looks like it could really mess up your albums at first, but once you see the method behind the genius madness, it all makes sense…kind of like a few listens of The Velvet Underground & Nico (with its iconic cover art by Andy Warhol).
