We all think of the Goodwill store as a place to find a great bargain while also helping the greater good. For many, it's the only place with affordable items. For others, it's a great way to know your old belongings are going toward a good cause.
Sometimes, however, old belongings end up in Goodwill even though they were never intended to. Sometimes they endure the test of time.
Jolyne McCary, from Albuquerque, New Mexico, was shopping at a Goodwill when she noticed a stunning little jewelry box. She purchased the box and brought it home. It was then that she noticed there were papers sticking out of it.
"All this stuff came falling out. A letter and some pictures and a social security card," Jolyne said.
The letter was dated from the 1970s and addressed to a "Miss Lourdes Rivera" of Santa Fe. It was written by a soldier fighting in the Vietnam War.
Jolyne had a feeling the letters were perhaps a little more special than something that could just be tossed away — not to mention the government documents.
Instead of disposing of the items she reached out to KOAT news to share her story in hopes of reuniting the letters with their owner. While no one has since claimed the items, Jolyne's story just goes to show that you never know when you may come across a hidden treasure.
