Something was definitely in the water last year in California, as the San Francisco Zoo was blessed with a record number of newborn babies!
One of the most exciting births was that of a baby gorilla born in July and was named Kabibe, which is Swahili for "little lady"… and that's exactly what this precious little one is! The curious little girl had so much energy and as soon as she was born she became instantly attached to someone surprising – her grandmother.
Bawang is the zoo's gorilla population's matriarch, who instantly jumped in as the newborns adoptive mother. San Francisco Zoo President Tanya Peterson said that this is not the first baby Bawang has looked out for. She acts as mother to all the gorillas in the zoo. “We feel very blessed to be able to contribute to the population of this critically endangered species," said Peterson.
