Grandson Saves Grandma By Holding On To Cross For Five Hours During SC Flood

Travis Catchings proved he would do anything for his dear Meemaw during the torrential South Carolina floods this week. It's hard to believe that 71-year-old Clara Gantt lived to tell the tale but it was her resilience and grandson's utter fearlessness that saved them.

Clara was on her way to church and didn't know the rain was getting this bad, when suddenly her car began to float; she was submerging.

"I said 'dear Lord are you taking me home right now?' Immediately I flipped over to my back and it was like he said 'no, not right now,' " Clara told CBS.

She called 911, but they were too busy rescuing others. She was able to get in touch with her grandson and, like a knight in shining armor, he showed up with a giant red cross and some rope.

"I was so glad to see him but I was afraid for him, too," Gantt said. Travis secured himself with the rope and began to swim her way.

"I said, 'Hey, Meemaw,' and I smiled at her and she smiled back. I said, 'We're gonna get you out of here,' " Travis said. He pulled Clara out of the car, and the two grabbed onto the large red cross — a piece of wreckage from the church, now their only safety net. The pair held on for five hours before they were finally rescued.

Sometimes it's Grandma's job to save her grandson — but after a certain age, it's the other way around.

"I call him my hero but he doesn't want me to call him that," Clara said.

"I love you and that's what we're here for," Travis replied.
