A heart-wrenching photo of a Greek man crying outside of a bank in the midst of the country’s extreme financial crisis has received global attention over the last few days.
The image shows retiree Giorgos Chatzifotiadis, 77, outside a bank in the city of Thessaloniki after a failed attempt to withdraw his wife’s pension money for the week because of the nation’s capital control.
In tears, Chatzifotiadis is quoted saying he can’t stand to see such distress in his country.
“That’s why I feel so beaten, more than for my own personal problems,” he added.
However, good news is on its way for Chatzifotiadis. Sydney-based CEO James Koufos stumbled upon the photo and shared an urgent message on his Facebook page on Monday asking strangers to track him down.
“This man is a old school friend of my late father!” he wrote. “I will never allow to see a fellow Greek proud hardworking man starve!!”
The businessman, who told The Daily Mail that Chatzifotiadis and his father were once classmates in a Greek village, wants to give the man pension money for a year.
"I've been getting a lot of attention over this, but it isn't about me, I don't want the focus on me," he said. "All of us are human beings and sometimes hits us in the sweet spot and we react without thinking — that's what happened to me when I saw this. I knew I had to try and do something."
