For the average person, a new haircut is nothing more than an affordable luxury and maybe even a chance to receive some extra "likes" on social media. Yet, for the homeless men in the video below, it’s an opportunity to become relatable.
What’s The Difference, conceptualized by Tyler Bridges, shows barbers giving men from Los Angeles-based homeless shelter, Union Rescue Mission, a free cut. Some of them, including the gentleman at :35, become unrecognizable. One even appears to tear up after looking in the mirror.
"We tend to look at someone suffering from homelessness and see him as a monster or someone you can't relate to at all," Bridges told People. "But if you give him a shower and a shave and a fresh cut, he looks just like you or me. There isn't that big difference [sic]."
There are more than 600,000 people experiencing homelessness in America. They are often berated and misconstrued, as seen in a very powerful video by Raising The Roof, a Canadian organization fighting homelessness. And many people try to avoid the homeless at all costs.
“What’s the difference between you and them?” the video asks. “We are all the same… Don’t let difference define us.”
The video also encourages viewers to visit Association of Gospel Rescue Missions website and find a local place to volunteer.
