There is nothing worse than the sinking realization that you’ve been scammed. Sadly, it’s become a fairly common experience in an economy full of get-rich-quick schemes.
Whether you gave money to a charity that turns out to be fake, or you purchased the wedding dress of your dreams online, and received a nightmare, scams are becoming increasingly insidious and creative.
Karen Morris, a Tampa, FL homeowner, was the unfortunate victim of a scam as old as time. She paid a handyman to repair her bathroom, but was left with more expenses than she started with.
After receiving hundreds of dollars and ripping up her floorboards, the handyman disappeared, never completing the job. After he left, Morris was distraught to discover that he had destroyed her flooring, cut off the running water, and left her toilet in the bathtub.
She had given him every spare cent, and had nothing left to pay for further repairs. Morris, who acts as full-time caretaker to her elderly, bed-ridden mother, was out of options.
So she turned to a local news station known for raising awareness about stories like hers. In the past, they helped bring attention to this man’s struggle with homelessness after his identity was stolen.
Upon investigating the damage, the station, ABC Action News, was able to set Morris up with a home improvement firm and a plumber willing to help her out pro bono.
Dreammaker Kitchen & Home and Gator Plumbing are donating time, money, and supplies to completing the project. Now, it looks like Karen Morris and her mother will have a beautiful new bathroom by this time next month!
