This Cat Cost Her $1,500! When You Find Out Why, You’ll CHOKE!

Pets are near and dear to our hearts. They cheer us up when we’re down, make us laugh, and innately understand friendship. So we don’t mind spending money on the animals we love, especially when they’re sick. No amount of money is too much for their good health.

But what happens when your animal has a truly unique condition that will cost you quite the pretty penny?

Meet Mittens, a cuddly house cat with big, beautiful eyes and a penchant for attacking string. Mittens' mama, Colleen Clarke-Murphy, adopted the stray after the cat followed her daughter home. Upon Mittens' arrival, Colleen took her to the vet. That’s when she received the shock of a lifetime — her cat had both male and female genitalia. Mittens is a hermaphrodite.

Hermaphrodites are actually quite common in nature. Hermaphroditic species include earthworms, snails, and some species of starfish and sponges. You chew on that next time you watch SpongeBob SquarePants!

The condition does occur in mammals, such as humans, as well. In fact, according to Greek mythology, Hermes and Aphrodite’s son was said to be both sexes, which is where the word “hermaphrodite” derives from (herm from Hermes, aphrodite from Aphrodite). It is associated with a mutation in the SRY gene and can be quite distressing for those who are born with the condition.

It can also be troubling to those who love these individuals. When Colleen learned that she would have to pay $1,500 to get her cat both spayed and neutered and then get Mittens gender reassignment surgery, it was quite disconcerting.

To find out what Colleen decided to do, watch the video below.

Would you get the surgery for your pet if they were in a similar situation? Let us know in the comments below.
