On August 31st, Andrew Harris was driving his motorcycle home from work when he got into a very bad accident. When a 72-year-old man pulled out in front of him, he swerved to avoid him, but there was still a collision, and Andrew was launched from his bike.
As a result, Andrew's left leg was severed, and he lost two toes on his right foot. But the accident could have resulted in a much more tragic ending if it hadn't been for one hero cop, who happened to be just a block away.
Broward Sheriff's Office reserve deputy Richard Griffin arrived on the scene to find people trying frantically to help Andrew, who was on the verge of major blood loss.
"I just remember seeing this big burly arm next to me and like a police badge, and I was like, man, help is finally here," said Andrew.
The officer happens to also be a Vietnam War veteran with a PhD.
"I split his pant leg, determined there was no other injury that I could treat, found his femoral artery and pinched his femoral artery off until EMS came," Richard said.
Over the course of his two month hospital stay, Andrew had six blood transfusions and six surgeries, but three months after the accident, he's just happy to be alive.
