Brandi and John are familiar with the homeless man who lives in a tattered, makeshift tent in the field behind the apartment complex where they live together.
Though they've never spoken to him, the couple sees him when they walk their dogs and recognize him as their neighbor and someone they share space with.
While the couple was doing some routine cleaning and going through their belongings, John suggested that they could give some of the things they didn't need anymore to the man in the tent.
Brandi thought it was a great idea and agreed. The couple decided to call it a "winter care package" and didn't end up limiting its contents to things they would have otherwise thrown out.
The backpack, aka winter care package, included blankets, canned and nonperishable food, toiletries and more food. In fact, the winter care package had a second component: The couple also decided to fill a trash bag with a comforter, pillows and a big, cozy, one-size-fits-all sweater. It really was a winter care package after all.
Perhaps the most moving part of the gesture was a letter that John decided they should include with the rest of the goodies.
The letter itself was submitted to the Love What Matters Facebook page, along with a detailed description of the couple's thought process.
It can be seen below, and it carries the powerful message that "our job as human beings is to take care of each other."
