Maria Proffitt is homeless. She lives in her truck with her dog, Baby, but often chooses to park it in a Kangaroo Express parking lot in Colonial Heights, VA.
Store manager Phyllis Hicks doesn't mind; Maria doesn't bother anyone and doesn't beg for money or help. If anything, Maria has become like family because of how long she's been staying in the parking lot.
So when she heard a voice scream her name and call for help one day, as she was sitting in her car, Maria didn't hesitate to follow it.
It turns out that Phyllis had tripped and fallen. She couldn't breathe and did everything in her power to call out Maria's name, knowing she would respond.
At first, the homeless woman didn't realize Phyllis was in trouble. Her dog's ears perked up, and that's when she knew there was something wrong.
Seeing the store manager quickly turning blue on the ground, she called out to one of the store employees to call for an ambulance, which arrived quickly to the scene. And just in time, too! Phyllis had suffered a heart attack, and if her friend hadn't been around, she surely would have died.
Now, she's calling Maria a hero!
