Nowadays, a lot of people are pinching pennies, tightening their belts, living on shoestrings… Did I miss any thrifty idioms? My point is, a lot of people are looking to save some money — and they're coming up with very clever ways to do so!
One popular way to cut costs is to move into a tiny house. But if squeezing your family into a matchbox-sized home isn't a viable option for you, a more practical solution might be the "do it yourself" movement! This frugal, healthy alternative promotes saving green while you live green — and it's not only cheap, but very easy too!
For instance, we all know how expensive brand-name laundry detergent can be. But did you know that with only three ingredients and less than $5, you can wash 30 loads of laundry? Considering you might have these ingredients in your house, the savings definitely add up fast!
I can't wait to try this recipe out! I watched the video below, and the steps seem really easy.
If you want to give it a shot, here are the ingredients you'll need:
- 1 bar shaved soap (Fels-Naptha or Ivory)
- 1 cup borax
- 1 cup Arm & Hammer washing soda

Step 1: Gather your ingredients. You'll also need a 4-cup food processor, a cheese grater, and a container to keep the detergent in.

Step 2: Grate your bar of soap with the cheese grater.

Step 3: Use your food processor to blend your shaved soap, borax, and Arm & Hammer washing soda.

Step 4: Transfer your detergent to an airtight container — and voila! Homemade detergent for less than $5!

You can also store your detergent in a cute Mason jar for a decorative touch. Sprinkle in 2 Tbsp for every load of laundry, and enjoy your clean clothes!
