While I’ve heard of swimmers having some pretty amazing encounters with sea creatures in the ocean before, I’ve never seen anything like this.
While swimming in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Maui last month, tourist and YouTube user Walter Ejnes had a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a giant humpback whale. (And he happened to record the entire experience, as well!) While on a whale watch tour with Hawaii’s Ultimate Whale Watch excursion, Ejnes got to observe a mother and her baby floating near their boat. A 50-foot male humpback whale appeared out of nowhere from directly below the boat, surfacing about one yard from the bow of the 30-foot vessel.
If that doesn’t give you chills, then I don’t know what will! While I’m sure this experience was pretty amazing (I mean, how often do you get to be so up close and personal with nature?), it can also be quite frightening, all depending on the whale’s mood. Personally, I would have had a heart attack knowing that a humpback whale was trying to protect his family so close to me! It’s a good thing the whale didn’t decide to take a detour toward the boat full of tourists!
