An elderly husband from Colorado proved that true love never dies during the last few days of his life.
Elmer Melchi, who was a paratrooper during World War II, was suffering from cancer and placed in a hospice care center in Pueblo, CO. His wife June, a former volunteer with the British Red Cross, was at a different facility while being treated for dementia.
Knowing his time on Earth was limited, Elmer still really wanted to be with June, whom he wed in 1945. However, his initial request to move into his wife's nursing home was denied. According to Colorado's KRDO, Elmer was later granted permission to switch facilities, but was too weak to do so at that point.
Yet, with the help of Sangre de Cristo Hospice, Elmer finally got his wish when June was brought to see him.
As you’ll see below, the two serenaded each other with the classic song “You Are My Sunshine” during their reunion, creating a tear-jerking moment similar to the one from the Utah couple who performed the same song during difficult times.
“Unbelievable, they lit up with singing songs together,” son Garry Melchi emotionally told Colorado’s News Channel 13.
One week after the reunion, Elmer passed away at the age of 92 on January 28, 2016.
