As any mother can attest, the hormones of pregnancy really do a number on you during those nine long months. Not only are your emotions all out of whack and causing some occasional bouts of unusual behavior, but you suddenly find yourself craving food you would ordinarily be repulsed by. I remember one of my best friends realizing she was pregnant with her second child simply because she suddenly wanted a mixture of spaghetti and Oreos for dinner.
When both Lucille Ball and her quirky main character on I Love Lucy were in the family way back in 1952, things were no different! In this scene from the show's second season, she and Ricky are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Little Ricky when she finds herself yearning for some hilariously disgusting snacks. First, she asks the "Babaloo" man to bring home a papaya juice shake. That's not too strange, but when he pulls out a large dill pickle and she proceeds to dip it right into the creamy drink? I definitely made a face that was very similar to Ricky's!
Later in the same episode, the redhead has an urgent desire for another meal at the inconvenient hour of 4 a.m. Ricky trudges out into the cold weather to return with another frozen treat. This time, it's a pint of pistachio ice cream she's after. Topping it with hot fudge does seem sort of weird, but nothing too crazy… until she has Ricky pour sardines on top of that, too. This time, however, he has a much more surprising reaction.
