The Aldabra tortoise is the world’s second largest tortoise species. Many zoologists even compare them to dinosaurs, because they have been around forever and grow so big! On February 9th, nine of these unusual tortoises were born at the Tulsa Zoo in Oklahoma and the photos of these babies blew my mind! A baby giant tortoise starts out weighing only 50 grams and can grow up to 400 pounds in its lifetime!
This type of tortoise originates from the islands of the Aldabra atoll in the Seychelles.
Did you know that once a baby tortoises starts to hatch, it can take up to five days for it to fully emerge from it’s shell?
The Tulsa Zoo is one of two zoos in the US that breed Aldabras. Their program has successfully hatched 109 since 1999!
The Aldabra giant tortoise can live to be over 100! Here’s to a long life for this little guy!!!
