When I Saw This Iceberg I Was Mesmerized. But Look Again — It’s Not What It Seems!

For over 100 years now, The Titanic has intrigued the imaginations of millions of scientists, artists, explorers, and authors.

As soon as a mere month after that fateful night, filmmakers have been attempting to capture the majesty of the mighty Titanic's death. Dozens of films have been made on the subject, from epic Hollywood blockbusters, to small budget internet films starring cats as the main characters on board the doomed ocean liner.

So many people died that terrible night and we are hungry for more and more of their stories. These icebergs might reveal just a little something about the nature of that terrible tragedy.

During its maiden voyage, on April 14th, 1912 the "unsinkable" Titanic hit an iceberg and went down in less than three hours.

Over 1,500 lives were lost that night in the freezing Atlantic ocean.

As a direct result of the sinking, the public DEMANDED that ocean liners now be equipped with more safety equipment and life boats.

Some of the most prominent people of the day were aboard the doomed ship. Amongst them were John Jacob Astor IV, Benjamin Guggenheim, and Margaret "Molly" Brown.

It's thought that an iceberg floated down from near the coast of Labrador... Weird optical effects begin to take place when the water jumps from warm to freezing.

It's thought that because of those optical illusions, the lookout crew aboard the Titanic had no chance to see an iceberg in time... Binoculars or not, they didn't have a chance.

It's also been theorized that if the Titanic hadn't veered off and had just hit the iceberg head on, it wouldn't have sank.

Heartbreakingly, a nearby ship, the SS Californian, could have saved everyone. But due to miscommunications, the ship remained just out of reach...
