It’s tough to find a substitute for a mother, but when this short-tailed fruit bat was abandoned by his mother, that’s what the volunteers at Bat World Sanctuary did. I have to admit… I used to think bats were creepy. But this little fella stole my heart!
When Lil’ Drac’s mother was rescued after a zoo closure, the stress of the move caused her to abandon her baby. The way these volunteers mimicked a mother bat’s care is incredibly moving. When they caressed his head with a damp cotton swab that felt like his mother’s tongue, I started to cry. If you understand the power of a mother’s love–even if she’s not our biological mom.
