When This Immigrant Couple Died, They Left America A Shocking Gift

After spending nearly 60 years in the United States, one immigrant couple decided to leave something very special behind in their wills — and it's shocking Americans nationwide.

When the Nazis invaded his hometown of Prague, 12-year old Peter Petrasek's life was torn apart. While he was sent to a youth camp in Germany, Peter's sister was shipped to Dresden for factory work. Peter would never hear from or see his family again.

In 1949, Peter became a certified refugee at a U.S. airfield in Germany. A few years later, he moved to Ottawa, Canada, where he would meet Joan, an Irish immigrant. The two fell in love and married.

After spending some time in Quebec, the couple would eventually move to the United States, where they lead happy and successful lives. So happy, in fact, that when they passed away, they felt compelled to do something for the United States government to repay their adopted country's generosity.

After escaping their respective war-torn countries, Peter and Joan Petrasek were grateful to arrive in America. The two moved to Seattle, where they worked hard, bought a home, and happily prospered for the rest of their lives.

After nearly six decades in America, Joan and Peter would pass away. But because the two left behind no children or immediate family, there was no one to inherit their significant estate.
