It's a boy!
The San Diego Zoo has just revealed the sex of their newest arrival, a rare jaguar cub.
The adorable cub made his public debut this past weekend. Born March 12 to mother Nindiri, a seven-year-old jaguar, the cub weighed in at roughly two pounds. He is doing very well, having more than doubled in weight to 4.8 pounds since his birth. It is the third cub for mom, who stayed close by her baby's side as she presented him to the world.
This video is the first time he is being introduced to the public worldwide. He has been spending most of his time with his mom in an off-exhibit area, waiting for him to open his eyes and get ready for his close-up!
Mom cautiously carries her cub into his new bedroom. With all of its sounds, smells, and, of course, the public, it can be a little overwhelming. But he seems to be adjusting just fine, walking right up to the glass to peer out at his audience.
Jaguars are the largest cats in the western hemisphere. They are a critically endangered species (like these adorable red pandas) with only an estimated 10,000 left in the wild, so the birth of this cub is a very exciting event! I'm sure this cutie will quickly become the top attraction for visitors to the zoo.
