They Said She Would NEVER Be Beautiful. What She Did? WOW!

Could major fashion brands finally be moving away from using the stereotypical waif-thin models in their runway shows? We know of at least one designer who wants to break the mold — and we're all for it!

Carrie Hammer used a wheelchair-bound model during her New York Fashion Week show in February 2014 and a quadruple amputee during her show last September as part of her "Role Models, Not Runway Models" campaign. On Hammer's website, she writes that she is "shaking up the status quo when it comes to dressing professional women" and she's doing exactly that for her third round of NYFW.

In this year's show, Hammer will feature Jamie Brewer, an American Horror Story actress and model with Down syndrome, as her next "Role Model." Brewer's fame on the FX show has already done a lot to break down walls for the Down syndrome community, but when she walks down the runway rocking an original Carrie Hammer design, she's bound to have everyone in the fashion community talking, too.

Will Hammer's show encourage other designers to use real women in their shows? We really hope so… High fashion is long overdue for this kind of positive change!
