Janis Joplin's famous flashy Porsche is worth a whole lot of money.
The car exceeded expectations and sold for a whopping $1.76 million in New York City on Thursday, according to a tweet from RM Sotheby's. Like the incredibly hidden and expensive Picasso painting, this work of art has an intriguing history.
Joplin, whose powerful voice made her a beloved rock legend (just listen to her sing "Piece of My Heart"), bought the car in September 1968. She paid about a mere $3,500 for the 1964 Porsche 356 that was originally pearl white.
Dave Richards, a roadie from Joplin's band Big Brother and the Holding Company, added the one-of-a-kind mural. It includes a lot of color and many butterflies, as well as a picture of the band and Joplin together.
"Janis drove the car everywhere, all around San Francisco and down to Los Angeles when she was recording there," her sister/biographer Laura Joplin said, according to Reuters. "Wherever Janis went in the car, her fans recognized it. When she parked it and returned, there was always at least one (fan) note under the wipers."
When Joplin died on Oct. 4, 1970 from a drug overdose at the age of 27, her family gifted the vehicle to her manager. Eventually, he returned it to Joplin’s family and they put it up for auction.
