AJ Weir is a fortysomething mother and beauty blogger from the U.K. When her son Morgan was born, she couldn't help but fall in love with him and the adorable dimple on his right cheek.
Weir did not carry the dimple gene herself, so she began feeling a bit jealous of Morgan's cute facial feature. Over time, it was hard to look at herself in pictures because she didn't have the dimples she so desired.
Eleven years after Morgan's birth, Weir decided she wanted to emulate Morgan's dimple once and for all.
Like mother, like son, right?
However, finding a surgeon who actually offered a "dimpleplasty" procedure was nearly impossible. Not only is it very rare in the U.K., there were also risks associated with creating artificial dimples in the cheeks, like permanent scarring. There was even a chance the procedure wouldn't work at all, and would prove nothing more than a waste of time and money.
Weir was undeterred. She booked herself a 90-minute dimpleplasty in early 2016. Her husband and son both told her she was "absolutely bonkers" for going forward with what many of her friends and coworkers called a "stupid cosmetic procedure."

AJ Weir, a 44-year-old beauty blogger, always loved dimples — but she simply wasn't born with the dimples gene.
Weir's 11-year-old son Morgan, however, does have dimples.
Admittedly, Weir grew quite envious of Morgan's cute facial trait over the past decade.
After conducting some research, Weir finally found a surgeon who offered a "dimpleplasty" procedure, which is quite rare.
There were risks involved with creating artificial dimples in her cheeks, like permanent scarring. Also, the procedure was quite expensive. But Weir accepted the risks and decided she could afford it… So she thought, 'Why not?'
The mom was also well aware that other people saw it as just a "stupid cosmetic procedure," but she was undeterred by critics.
In early 2016, Weir underwent a 90-minute dimpleplasty procedure under a local anesthetic.
Surgeons took chunks from the inside of her mouth and stitched up the gaps.
"As it heals and the scar tissue forms, it breaks the muscle so that when you smile, the tissue pulls in and that creates the dimple effect," Weir said.
In the days following the procedure, AJ's face began to bruise and swell. The healing process was much more painful than the procedure itself.
She hoped that through the recovery process, the dimple crease would only reveal itself when she smiled.
Only time would tell if the procedure was effective…
About a month later, Weir's sutures healed.
Her friends and coworkers began noticing her face looked a bit… different.
She was getting the results she wanted.
While Weir is satisfied with her face and brand-new dimples, her husband Jacob and her son think she's "absolutely bonkers."
Even Weir agrees the procedure was unnecessary. She always knew it wouldn't make her more "successful" — it was simply something she wanted to do for herself.
Looking back, the pain and soreness was well worth it for the mom and beauty blogger.
"I never regretted having it done," she said. "My dimples look really natural. You wouldn't think that I've had surgery."
