Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck Open Up About What Led Them To Cancel Their 2003 Wedding

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck don't necessarily have a traditional love story, but Jennifer hopes that their story helps others believe in love. The couple finally got married in 2022 — almost 20 years after they canceled their wedding. In the new Amazon Prime documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told, Jennifer, 54, and Ben, 51, recall what led to them canceling their wedding just a few days before they were supposed to get married in 2003.

"Ben and I, we broke up three days before our wedding," Jennifer said, as per Entertainment Tonight.

Though they had their wedding celebration planned, they couldn't deal with the pressure of it all at the time. "We had a big wedding planned — 14 ushers and bridesmaids, and three days before we just crumbled under the pressure," Jennifer said.

“Excessive media attention" contributed to their split, People reported. Ben confirmed that the amount of attention they were getting at the time was too much to deal with.

"When Jen and I broke up before, the catalyst for that was the massive amount of scrutiny around our private life," he said, according to Entertainment Tonight.

Jennifer admitted that she was "angry at [Ben] for a long time." She lost "the love of [her] life" and "the best friend that [she] ever had" when she and Ben split up.

Director Dave Meyers called their breakup “catastrophic." Luckily, though they dealt with heartbreak after their initial split, they eventually got back together. Jennifer and Ben also said that they've forgiven each other.

"I think for us to move on from that, we have to forgive it, forgive each other," Ben said.
