We hear all the time about animals that aren’t nearly as dangerous as their fearsome reputation would have us believe. After all, plenty of creatures are natural predators, but aren’t really interested in bothering humans unless we bother them first.
Sometimes, these fearsome beasts develop a cordial relationship, or even a friendship with us humans, like these lions who absolutely adore hugging their human friend. Of course, that’s not to say that their dangerous reputations should go unheeded, as we learned from this gentleman who explains that it took decades for him to build a relationship with one pack of hyenas.
There are also a few animals that aren’t necessarily known for being vicious, but can be very dangerous when crossed. Hippopotami, though often depicted as cute and cuddly, can be very aggressive if they need to be and have even been known to attack boats.
Not surprisingly, it’s very rare to see a hippo that has bonded with human companions. One exception to that rule? Jessica Hippo, a resident of a stretch of river near Hoedspruit, South Africa.
Jessica was orphaned or abandoned at a very early age and bonded with Tonie and Shirley Jourbert, the couple who found her. They believe that they’re the first other animals that Jessica ever saw, and they raised her from babyhood.
Now thirteen years old, Jessica is still very attached to Mom and Dad. She visits nearly every day, and often stops by the house for dinner or to hang with the Joubert’s dog. Check out the video below to learn more about the adorable dynamics of this unusual family!
And if Jessica Hippo and her parents melt your heart, please SHARE on Facebook for everyone who loves their non-human family too!
