Not a lot of people are aware that Jim Morrison's dark and troubled "Whisky Bar," is actually a creepy cover version that was originally penned by Bertolt Brecht in 1925!
Originally written in German, this spooky-sounding song was later translated by Brecht's close friend, Elisabeth Hauptmann. This English version finally made its way to Brecht's 1930 opera, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.
We should consider ourselves lucky to have such a clear copy of this incredibly spooky song. The skillful composition, the dissonance within the piece, and the minor chords used in the song: these are all are incredible examples of a high understanding of music theory.
I don't know about you, but I would not want to listen to this song alone at night. It's beautiful, but there's just something about it that feels…weird. Something about it seems almost as if it's calling spirits long dead to dance around the listener. Whether it be the high-pitched woman's voice singing, or the deep voice of the men's choir — all of it just makes me shiver!
