After much anticipation, the name of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s baby girl was finally revealed, and it honors the Duke of Cambridge's beloved late mother: Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
Middleton, 33, gave birth to the fourth in line to the British throne at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London on May 2. The newborn, whose official title is Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, weighed 8 lbs, 3 oz.
“The Duke and Duchess are hugely grateful for the messages of congratulations they have received from people all over the world,” the Kensington Palace wrote on its official Twitter page. “It means a great deal to them that so many people have celebrated the arrival of their new daughter.”
Shortly after the baby's birth, Prince William brought older brother Prince George to meet his sister. That same day, the happy parents left the hospital to return to the Kensington Palace with their newborn in tow and received loud applause from people waiting outside.
Baby Charlotte's birth could certainly mean that there will be a lot more baby girls bearing her name in the near future. According to the online family history resource, Ancestry.com, the birth of a royal baby makes his or her name much more appealing to future moms in the United Kingdom, rising on average by about 32 percent.
After Prince George was born in July 2013, for example, his name became one of the top 10 baby names in the region the following year.
