Everyone knows the Piano Man. Yes, I know it's a song, but through that song, Billy Joel made a persona for himself as the one and only Piano Man. It's an iconic piece of music, settled nicely atop Joel's many other incredible contributions to the industry, that seems to transcend genre, language, and anything else that may keep it from reaching each and every person on the planet.
Everybody knows the words. It's instantly recognizable from the very first stroke of the piano keys. And it's so, so loved. Much like Joel himself.
Just ask Jimmy Fallon. He's a huge fan of the Piano Man, and he even performed an impromptu tune with him on The Tonight Show. Or check with Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer, who recently hopped up on Joel's piano during one of his shows for a quick dance.
Joel's icon status was cemented even further when he was awarded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. He was set to perform "Piano Man," but a few people thought he might be a bit lonely onstage. Those people just so happened to be Kevin Spacey, Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Natalie Maines, LeAnn Rimes, Michael Feinstein, and Boyz II Men. It's as amazing as it sounds.
