This story is a great reminder that at the end of the day, we’re all just people, and if we can find that shared humanity and be kind and respect one another, the world would be a much better place to live.
It was an exceptionally busy weekend in Washington, DC, due to a presidential inauguration and a march for women’s rights that brought in thousands of individuals from all over the United States.
According to CBS News, Rosalynd Harris was working a shift at Washington’s popular restaurant, Busboys & Poets, when three men came in wearing cowboy hats.
Harris told CBS affiliate WUSA-TV that she assumed that the group of men were likely from the South as they were all wearing cowboy hats and she wondered if they would fit in as the dining establishment has more of a “liberal, Democratic kind of feel.”
The news outlet reports that the three men who sat down ended up being Republicans from West Texas who were in town for the presidential inauguration in January 2017. Harris politely served the men their meal and when the check was paid, she found herself completely shocked by what was written on the bill from one of the patrons.

CBS News reports that Harris was left a $450 tip on a $70 bill. And to top it off, one of the men at that table left a note scribbled on the bill that read: “We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues but if everyone would share this smile and kindness like your beautiful smile our country will come together as one people. Not race. Not gender. Just American. God Bless.”
