Mechanic Steve Byrd at Vann York Honda in Greensboro, NC has solved plenty of car problems, but when one woman brought her car in to be inspected for strange noises coming from underneath the car, nothing prepared him for what he found.
After investigating further, it turns out the noises weren't a sign of car troubles. Instead, it was "mews" and "purrs" coming from kittens that were riding in an enclosed plastic part near the gas tank. (This reminds me of man who drove 200 miles, only to find a dog stuck in his car's bumper — alive!)
No one is sure how the two litters of kittens made the journey from Kentucky to Greensboro, NC riding under the hood of a car, but they were immediately taken to Northwood Animal Hospital for treatment. The poor babies were dehydrated and hungry and later transferred to Guilford County Animal Shelter to be fostered.
Sadly, not all of the kittens survived. Byrd adopted the first kitten he saw underneath the car. He named her Derby, since it was the day of the 141st Kentucky Derby. The rest of the surviving litter are still available for adoption at Guilford County Animal Shelter.
