‘Krampus’ Movie Puts A Terrifying Twist On Christmas

Each year, as the fall and winter seasons begin to set in and the holiday festivities begin, we're reminded of family traditions of old. We sit around tables with friends and family while counting our blessings and looking forward to the coming year.

But this holiday season, a new film will attempt to turn your feel-good holiday on its head. Krampus is here to fuel your Christmas nightmares.

Krampus, for those who've been fortunate enough to avoid folklore of the Christmas Devil, is described by National Geographic as "a half-goat, half-demon, horrific beast who literally beats people into being nice and not naughty." According to lore, he shows up on Krampusnacht (the night before December 6) to beat children who've behaved badly the previous year. (If this doesn't sound like it was hatched from the imagination of a wildly frustrated parent of a difficult child, then color me shocked.)

This centuries-old demon with Germanic roots is the antagonist of a new holiday horror film by writer and director Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r TreatX-Men: Apocalypse). Starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette, and David Koechner, the film follows a family trapped in their home during a terrible storm reportedly after a young boy 'accidentally' summons the beast to terrify them all.

Krampus premieres in U.S. theaters on December 4, 2015.
