The beauty industry is booming and women are leading the pack.
According to Forbes, there are at least 40 prominent beauty startups in today's $445 billion industry that are founded by women.
In 2015, Kylie Jenner joined the pack and quickly took the lead.
The reality TV superstar launched her own cosmetics line called Kylie Cosmetics, and it's been blowing up ever since.
15 million people follow the popular makeup brand on Instagram alone.
Every year, Kylie debuts a new holiday collection.
In 2017, one of the new items was an eye shadow palette with 14 beautiful shades.
Customers were eager to spend $44 on it. After all, it's a very reasonable price!
In December 2017, fans were so excited when Kylie Cosmetics announced the debut of a brand new line of makeup brushes.
Kylie herself dubbed the Silver Series collection as "the most amazing luxury brushes ever."
But fans were quickly disappointed, and even stunned, to see the price point on the eagerly awaited set.
All 16 brushes are sold individually (the cheapest brush is $16).
But the cost of the entire limited-edition set?
A whopping $360.
A set of 11 makeup brushes at stores like Urban Outfitters cost around $23.
Kylie faced an instant backlash, as fans were not happy about the price.
Many people say $360 is simply way too expensive, and that there are many other brands that make quality brushes for more affordable prices.
Kylie eventually took to Twitter to defend the cost of her Kylie Cosmetic brushes, which are made with natural bristles.
"Real brushes don’t compare to synthetic brushes," she wrote. "Different performance/quality/everything."
"I am 100% down to do an entire synthetic line in the future which will ultimately be cheaper.”
Synthetic makeup brushes have become more popular in recent years. Though natural brushes are often softer, synthetic brushes are typically cheaper. Plus, they're made of materials like polyester and nylon, rather than animal hair used in natural makeup brushes.
So, synthetic brushes are great for animal lovers who prefer using vegan cosmetics.
As the criticism continued, Kylie sent out another tweet — this time, comparing her set to other higher-end brands like MAC.
But this didn't help. In fact, it only seemed to make her fans angrier.
The entrepreneur sent out one last tweet, making sure her fans knew she heard their complaints.
Do you think $360 is too expensive for a set of makeup brushes?
