After 31-year-old Christina Stephens lost her foot, the amputee turned to a favorite childhood toy to bring joy to herself and others. Using hundreds of lego bricks, Stephens spent two hours over two days and created a prosthetic leg.
The idea came up one day while she was joking with her colleagues about the different kinds of prosthetic legs she should use. That's when one person joked that she should make a new leg out of Legos. The idea stuck with her, and she got to work.
"Someone in my research lab jokingly suggested I make a prosthetic leg out of legos. The joke's on you. I went home and did it," she wrote on her YouTube page. "Sometimes, you just need to be silly."
She created a time-lapse video of her constructing the colorful Lego leg, admitting while the leg isn't exactly functional, she hopes the video will help de-sigmatize amputation and make it less scary.
