Leroy Pope of Huntsville, AL, loved his home. He loved it so much that he would boast to his community and neighbors that his house had the town's finest view right from his porch.
Joshua Cox wasn't too fond of Pope, so when Cox had plans to build his own home, he knew it was the perfect moment to get revenge.
The year was 1814 and homes typically weren't big, and also certainly not very high. Cox decided to build his mansion extra tall just to spite Pope. The first floor had ceilings 14 feet tall, and the second story boasted ceilings 16 feet tall.
The enormous house completely blocked Pope's view. Understandably, the father was furious. But little did Cox know, Leroy had the upper hand all along.
Cox did not have the clear title to the property! In fact, the land belonged to Pope all along. Pope evicted Cox from the home he had built himself, but what he did with it was even more unbelievable.
Pope gave the mansion to his daughter to live in. Cox's petty victory was quickly lost. Today, the home is known as the Huntsville "spite house" and is a part of Alabama history.
