Although the holidays are over, Christmas trees can still be enjoyed long after they're discarded by a family. Did you know that real Christmas trees are like catnip to lions? That's why, every year, the Linton Zoo asks families to donate their old trees so the big cats can have a post-holiday treat!
In the video below, the zookeepers throw discarded trees into the lions' den, and it produces some heartwarming results! Zuri, a male lion, becomes quite attached to his tree, using it as a giant scratching post. He and the other lions have hours of endless fun playing with the trees.
The zoo has had a fantastic response, but they are still looking for more donations from local residents and nurseries. The extra trees that don't get used as "toys" for the lions are being used in the zoo's bio-burner to provide additional heating for the buildings. What a fantastic idea!
