What's your favorite meal? Is it chicken and dumplings? How about a marinated steak on the grill? Maybe a nice, juicy cheeseburger? Now picture your favorite meal as a cake. Sounds crazy, right?
Well, Debbie Goard might soon have you thinking otherwise!
Debbie, a California-based baker who owns and operates Debbie Does Cakes, specializes in the sensational — so if you're shopping for cupcakes, cookies, or a plain old sheet cake, look elsewhere. Her cakes are works of art, totally customized and meticulously sculpted to perform as centerpieces for special events.
Throwing a retirement party for a man obsessed with buffalo chicken wings? She can do that. What about a coffee-lover celebrating his or her promotion? Yep, Debbie can make a cake for that, too! If you can dream it, Debbie can bake it — and her work is truly spellbinding. Exploring her gallery, I more than once asked myself if these were truly cakes, but indeed, they are!
I also found myself wondering what it's like to eat a cake that looks so much like a greasy pepperoni pizza, but alas, that question will have to go unanswered.

Debbie Goard was always artistic, but she never intended to be a baker.
Growing up, she would draw on napkins and paper towels — whatever she could get her hands on.
As she grew up, she knew she wanted to pursue art as a career, but she struggled to find the right fit.
Unable to find steady work, she applied for a job at a local grocery store as a deli clerk.
As she worked, she studied the food she prepared.
Outside of the deli, Debbie still pursued her art on the side.
One day, her manager asked her to step in for their cake decorator, who was retiring. Debbie, not at all familiar with baking, hesitantly agreed.
But Debbie was eager to learn. One week later, she sold her first cake, thus launching her professional life as a baker.
Years later, Debbie was still making cakes — but she wasn't satisfied, and often tried to escape the baking business.
She began to work at an "erotic" bakery, but still did not find the work rewarding.
Finally, Debbie decided to work on her own terms and launched her own business: Debbie Does Cakes.
Some people considered her cakes too shocking...so Debbie knew she was onto something!
Now, Debbie specializes only in the weird and shocking, refusing to bake traditional tiered or sheet cakes.
She also has a strict rule about artistic integrity. She will not honor any requests to replicate another baker's cake.
Debbie explains, "Some cakes may have inedible parts or structures." Of her animal-themed cakes, she writes, "Animal heads generally are made of edible materials."
Debbie happily declares on her site, "Thank you for letting me share my offbeat sensibilities to celebrate the weird, the wacky, and the wonderful."
