In 2010, a 29-year-old Southern dad who was raised by his grandparents in rural Missouri — a guy with just $28.96 in his bank account — became the winner of the 10th-largest Powerball jackpot ever.
Chris Shaw bought the winning $5 ticket at the Break Time convenience store where he worked and earned $7.25 an hour. He checked his ticket against the state lottery's website only after his girlfriend told him the winning ticket was bought at the store where he worked. When he showed up to Break Time, winning ticket in hand, his boss didn't believe it at first. "He's just a great guy, a good employee. When you think of a large winner like this, everyone likes to see that the person who won is somebody like Chris," she told the Associated Press.
It's so awesome to watch this regular guy who works paycheck-to-paycheck — with his tattoos, baseball hat, and T-shirt — holding the ticket that's about to change his life forever. Chris used the money to pay his electric and gas bills, finally replace his two missing front teeth, and take his family to Disney World. Most of all, Chris couldn't wait to spend more time with his kids. "I can be with them as much as I want now," he said.
