For more than 20 years, Cissy Cartwright has delivered mail in Hull, AL. A 66-year-old man named Tommy is on her route. On July 4, Tommy fell inside his home and broke several bones. For the next 10 days, he was stuck on his floor, unable to stand up. What happened next is nothing short of incredible.
Tommy lives by himself in a rural and secluded area, and no one was around to hear his cries for help. To make matters worse, he had very limited access to food and water. To keep himself alive, he was able to scoot on his back to the porch and reach a bucket of rain water.
10 days after he took his tragic fall, Cissy drove past Tommy's house and noticed his mail was piling up inside the mailbox, which she knew was unlike him. As soon as she noticed his front door was open, she decided to check on Tommy. That's when she found the poor man, starving and yelling for help. She immediately called 911, and a rescue team was finally on their way.
Tommy was treated for dehydration and underwent surgery to repair his broken bones. Cissy has visited him in the hospital several times. For her heroic deed that likely saved Tommy's life, she has been been nominated for the Postmaster General's Hero Award. Sherry Hughes, the town's Postmaster, says, "When [Hope] was being put on the stretcher that day, he looked right up at me and said, ‘I knew she would come. She just saved my life,'" Hughes told WSFA. “I knew then that she has definitely earned her title as a hero, even though she will tell you she was just doing her job."
