When I was around twenty, I finally mastered the use of liquid eyeliner. To this day, my pride in that accomplishment might be equal to my pride at my college graduation. A good cat eye easily takes as much time to refine as a well-constructed final paper! (I’m kidding, but only kind of.)
Suffice to say, I was blown away by makeup artist Magali Beauvue’s incredible ability to transform herself into myriad other people, both male and female. If my eyeliner shenanigans are an undergrad education, her skill set is at least two doctorates. Maybe three.
Honestly, it’s not easy to describe her process. It’s really one part artistry and one part magic. She contours, highlights, and thoroughly remodels her face as she progresses from a pretty woman in her late twenties, to the male celebrity of your choosing.
She adjusts her skin-tone, overdraws eyebrows, and adds facial hair as necessary, all in the name of creating a totally new (albeit familiar person) out of her own face. She does occasionally do tutorials that transform her into female celebs, but, like the inverse of Paolo Ballestros, she has a genius for recreating men.
Beauvue, who is African-American, often finds it easier to mimic a celebrity with a fairly similar skin tone, imitating musicians like Tupac, Drake, and Jay-Z. That said, she’s open to other suggestions — she has also transformed herself into Jackie Chan and Justin Bieber.
