A Maryland man’s decision to help his mom move paid dividends when he found a winning lottery ticket in some of her furniture. The mother-son duo, who have decided to remain anonymous, split the winnings from the $5 Holiday Luck Doubler ticket. They’ll each walk away $25,000 richer, from the $50,000 haul. A pretty good paycheck for a couple of days worth of physical labor. It made for an even better story for the people who will be privy to the tale. Publicly the pair are known as “We’ll Split It.”
The son first discovered the ticket in his mom’s home in Nottingham, People reports. His mother had purchased five scratch-off tickets as gifts for her grown children. She planned to put them in their stockings. But she never hung them from the chimney with care. Still, when her son found them months later, mom agreed that he could scratch them and they’d split any prizes.

Later at his own home, the son went to work on The Holiday Luck Doubler. The $5 ticket offers 15 chances to win. The first two tickets were not winners. One was worth $6, another $15. The last one was worth the big bucks. He scratched off the top prize for the game.
“Did that really just happen?” his wife asked him, according to the Maryland Lottery. It had. Still, the two didn’t believe it was real. The man called his mother and confirmed the tickets were real and she wasn’t pranking him.
As for the plans he has for the money, the son says he wants to save for a house. He actually owes his mom some money so he wants to pay her back as well. “So, she’ll actually end up getting more,” he told the Maryland Lottery. As for mom, she plans to share her prize money with her other children and grandchildren. They weren’t hiding their winnings from other family members.
The liquor store that sold the lottery ticket is also a winner. Its owners will receive a $500 bonus for selling the ticket. The Holiday Luck Doubler ticket has a last claim date for November 3.
