An Ohio billionaire plans to take a submersible back to the wreckage of the Titanic. Patrick Leahy announced the plan nearly a year after the fatal implosion of the Titan submersible.
Leahy, the co-founder and CEO of Triton Submarines, says an investor asked him to make a new sub that can reach the wreckage. The request came only days after the tragic event in June 2023.
Leahy told the Wall Street Journal, "He called me up and said, ‘You know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that, and that Titan was a contraption."
So Leahy put together a two-person, $20 million submersible that can ostensibly get the job done. The submersible can take "repeated trips" to a depth of 4,000 meters, which is 200 meters deeper than where the Titanic rests.
The investor, Larry Connor, told the outlet, "I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way."
