Last week, a man who lives in a homeless shelter was dubbed the "subway hero." 37-year-old Maurice was standing underground on a New York City subway platform when suddenly, he heard a woman screaming for help. The instant Maurice heard her cries — that a man was trying to sexually assault her inside a train — he sprung into action without hesitation.
The suspect had been fondling himself in the subway's last car before he chased the woman and jumped on top of her. He was attempting to rape her. As bystanders watched the woman struggle to run out of the train and onto the platform, Maurice pulled the suspect out of the train car, head-butted him, and dragged him by the collar all the way across the street, from the subway station to the police station! The traumatized victim managed to follow behind the two men — both her attacker and her hero — so she could tell the police what had happened.
The physical altercation left Maurice with a gash above his left eye and a swollen right hand. He told CBS2 that he's studying to become a medical assistant while living in a Brooklyn homeless shelter. "I like helping people. It makes me feel useful," he says.
One group of New York women were so moved by Maurice's story that they decided to help him in a big way. The women started an online fundraiser "on behalf of women everywhere" to help pay for Maurice's school tuition and expenses. In just a few days, the group received more than $13,000 in donations, exceeding their $10,000 goal.
Maurice took matters into his own hands, and he deserves all the acclaim he gets. Please SHARE this heroic story with your friends on Facebook!
