John Rieken has been waiting 30 years to say thank you to the woman who saved his life. Thanks to a chance encounter, he was finally able to fulfill his dream.
On March 21, 1985, he was riding his Harley Davidson when a car ran a stop sign and hit him. John was wearing a helmet, but he suffered multiple skull fractures. Dr. Ann Kay Cefalu, a 26-year-old pediatric resident, witnessed the accident and jumped out of her car to help him. John had no pulse, so she started chest percussions to get his heart pumping. It would be about 10 minutes before paramedics arrived.
He made it to the hospital where her underwent multiple surgeries. Months of recovery followed, but he was grateful to be alive. He wanted to thank the woman who helped him, but no one knew her identity. Finally, after 30 years of trying to track her down, a chance meeting brought them together.
