Normally, squirrels are very skittish creatures that avoid humans at all costs. Even city squirrels that are used to people walking all around them don't like to get too close, as far as urban standards go!
But that's all because they've been conditioned to look out for predators in their natural environment. They have to keep on their teeny, tiny toes at all times. There's no point in risking getting too close to such a big, intimidating creature as human beings.
But, like a lot of animals, if they grow up in a different environment, they'll learn a different way of life. Think of how a pup that grows up around mean people will behave with bits of aggression and fear. Then, once it's shown what it's like to be loved and cared for, the dog's true instinct will shine through.
That's just one example of an animal's environment affecting behavior.
When one little squirrel was found at the base of a tree, on the verge of death, a kindhearted man took him into his home. This little squirrel learned that humans could be very gentle creatures, too, especially this one man in particular. This orphaned squirrel never learned to be afraid of people.
Since this squirrel didn't stand a chance against nature, he's so lucky that this man picked him up and nursed him back to health. While he's no average squirrel, he lives an extremely safe and happy life.
