A teenage mom and her infant son were miraculously found alive after being stranded for days in the Colombian jungle.
Maria Nelly Murillo, 18, and 1-year-old Yudier Moreno were on a twin-engine Cessna that crashed Saturday in the South American country. While the pilot died, Murillo managed to push the cabin door open and climb out. She wandered in the jungle with her baby boy drinking rainwater and eating a coconut to survive.
Murillo was found in pretty bad shape, while her baby is doing well, according to news reports.
“The rescuers found her almost at the last moment,” a member of the Colombian Air Force said. “She was hurt pretty badly in the crash with severe burns and of course she suffered from thirst in the middle of the jungle. She barely had any strength left after the accident.”
As search parties looked desperately for the mother and son, they found several clues along the way, including a flip-flop, a cell phone, Moreno’s birth certificate, and an eaten coconut. Eventually, Red Cross volunteer Acisclo Renteria saw flies hovering over something on the floor. It was Murillo, approximately 500 meters from the crash.
"I thanked my little God for allowing me to save these two people," Renteria told the Associated Press. "One thing is telling you on the phone what we experienced, but it's quite another to have lived it."
