Mario Lopez Makes Red Carpet Return After July Surgery, But Everyone Is Baffled By His Outfit

Last night, stars gathered for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. However, there's a very important precursor to the awards show — the red carpet. It's where we get to see all our favorite celebs arrive, whom their dates are, and what they're wearing. While we could sit here for hours talking about the best and worst dressed of the night, there was one person who rocked a look so unique that everyone took notice — and that was Mario Lopez.

Aside from being one of our favorite Saved By the Bell alums and appearing on too many of our favorite shows to count, Mario is the host of NBC's Extra. This means that he's on red carpet duty during awards season, interviewing  stars and asking the all-important "Who are you wearing?" question. In a surprise twist, it was Mario's outfit that was getting all the attention on the red carpet.

It all started when Mario ended up in the ER on July 4, 2018, after tearing his Achilles tendon while sparring. The actor enjoys boxing and jujitsu, so he was less than thrilled about the injury.

Achilles tears result in about six months of recovery time. Not only does that mean being sidelined from some of his favorite activities, but it also makes getting around harder for the on-the-go 44-year-old.

While Mario's injury has been a pain in more ways than one, he's lucky to have an incredible support system to see him through.

Mario's wife of six years, Courtney, has been majorly supportive throughout his recovery.

He also has two beautiful children to keep his spirits up. His 5-year-old son, Dominic, made him this super-cute card.

His 8-year-old daughter, Gia, has also been by her daddy's side during his road to recovery.

Even with all the support in the world, Mario's day-to-day life has been greatly complicated by his injury. Here he's seen awkwardly trying to position his leg comfortably while hosting his radio show, On With Mario Lopez.

Even using his scooter to get around has backfired, as he took a tumble that resulted in him needing a new cast.

It's understandably a frustrating time for Mario, who saw some progress last month when he made the move from cast to "big *ss Storm Trooper boot."

Luckily, he's slowly getting back in motion, now able to work with a physical therapist on the final steps of his recovery.

Mario's been lighthearted about the whole thing, constantly making jokes at his own expense. He even tried on some other giant shoes for size to make light of it.

People were surprised when they tuned into the Emmy's red carpet to see Mario in shorts.

While putting on fitted dress pants with that thing can't be any walk in the park, it was the added discomfort of the heat that made Mario decide to go for the shorts, unlike when he appeared on Ellen.

So while Mario's look on TV's biggest night might have raised a few eyebrows, he put it best: "Screw it. It’s hot & I’ve got a medical boot. I’m rockin shorts."

Good call, Mario!
