We Drilled A Hole In A Mason Jar To Make The Perfect Citronella Candle!

On a warm summer evening, there's no place I'd rather be than my own back porch — cool drink in one hand, a book in the other, and both bare feet kicked up. Nothing but rest and relaxation for miles.

But the peace and quiet of this idyllic scenario is quickly shattered, however, when the first mosquito makes its mark…followed by another — and another — until finally my patio retreat becomes a bug-infested hell.

Sure, the drugstore sells a million-and-a-half varieties of bug sprays, lotions, and candles, but aren't there any fun alternatives to keep the bugs at bay? Something cheap, cute, and effective?

Yes!

And we here at LittleThings have taken the liberty of making you a quick and easy tutorial. All you'll need is a Mason jar, a drill, torch wicks, and some citronella fuel. Soon, your back porch will be bug-free and shabby chic — and all for just a few bucks!

Step 1: Gather your supplies. You'll need a Mason jar, torch wicks, citronella torch fuel, scissors, a drill, and a lighter.

Step 2: Begin to drill into the lid of your Mason jar. Hold onto it tightly!

You'll have to bear down on it pretty hard, so make sure you drill on a good surface.

Step 3: Expand and even out your hole. Make sure it's big enough for your wick.

Step 4: Once your hole is ready, remove the lid and band.

If you notice your hole is kind of jagged on the inside of your lid, grab a hammer and flatten it.

Step 5: If your wick is larger than your Mason jar, trim it down.

Step 6: Pull your wick through. For this step, you might want to enlist the help of a cute dog. I'm using an adorable silver pug named Smokey, but whatever you have around will work too.

Step 7: Pour your citronella torch fuel.

Step 9: Screw on the band nice and tight.

Step 10: Light it with a grill lighter. (It might take a few minutes for the wick to catch.)
