Concerned residents of a UK neighborhood spotted a young, disoriented fox cub running around with a plastic bottle on its head. They took a video of the fox before losing sight of him in the brush, and placed a call to the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Animal Service (WRAS).
Shining their torches for light under the dark night skies, the rescuers finally discovered the 7-week-old baby rustling around in the bushes. The bottle was tightly wedged around his tiny head, making it impossible to eat or drink.
Kathryn Martyn, partner of the WRAS founder, Trevor Weeks, feared the cub would be dead come morning. Giving up on the poor baby wasn't an option — but now came the difficult feat of carefully removing the bottle that was tightly wound around the fox's neck, cutting off its airways.
The cub was placed in a carrier and taken back to WRAS’s veterinary ambulance to have the plastic container removed. In the video below, I was on the edge of my seat watching these two heroes using scissors to carefully and precisely remove the jar. They cut a hold at the bottom of the container to help the fox breathe, and then used bandage scissors to cut through the length of the bottle.
The cub is now recovering WRAS’s Casualty Care Centre with around-the-clock care. The team hopes to reunite the lucky baby with its mom as soon as possible — and wait until you see its adorable face at the end, finally free!
