Buying a bag of milk seems really bizarre. But many folks in the United States don't realize that milk cartons are an American invention. Patented in 1915 by Jon Var Wormer of Toledo, OH, the classic cartons eventually replaced glass milk bottles because they were lighter and easier to transport.
Not to mention, the design is efficient, it doesn't even require a lid. But why milk bags? According to Extra Crispy, they're an environmentally friendly alternative. Milk bags are recyclable and take up far less space, once used, than a jug or carton.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that 70 percent of milk jugs are placed in landfills.
As you'll see in the video below, milk bags do require a few accessories, although they are reusable and about $1. The bags are placed in a pitcher that is made to fit its size, then the corner of the bag is cut to make pouring precise and easy.
The United Kingdom has been trying its hand at milk bags. Their popular grocery store chain Sainsbury's began using milk bags because they are 75 percent less plastic than jugs.
They also require fewer resources and less energy to produce.
So what do you think? Should the United States adopt this sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative? Let us know in the comments!
