I'll be honest, the last time I made a cake, it was definitely under the strict instruction given by Betty Crocker on the back of her box. After that, I simply plopped on my favorite can of frosting without much finesse for making it look smooth or even. In fact, you would probably assume the pathetic confection was baked by a child by the time I was done with it!
Of course, it isn't about how it looks but how it tastes. Still, there's something to be said for presentation, a skill I certainly lack. Others have found some creative ways around traditional baking decor, like the woman who brilliantly used celery stalks to create adorable flowers on her scrumptious cake. Those who take their sweet treats super seriously might want to invest in a spinning clay wheel for their icing needs.
However, I think even I could master the method used below. Sure, I might have a little trouble making sure the cake is completely smoothed out before starting, but I have a feeling this technique will look just as awesome on a slightly lumpy baked good, too.
Known as "mirror glazing," you begin by adding a bit of gelatin to the icing mixture, and making sure it's more liquid than whipped. From there, you simply pour the sugary topping all over the chilled cake with a pan below to catch all the excess dripping.
Take a look below to see how she layers the gooey glaze onto the cake. If it tastes half as good as it looks, you're in for a real treat!
